A goal in each half from Robbie Petrie upset title-chasing St Mawes and boosted Pelynt's own promotion challenge. Saints have been amongst the leaders all season but were caught out by Pelynt's terrific work rate in all departments.

There was an early sign of things to come when Petrie was played through by Trevor Wisker but his shot was just off target. There was tough tackling from both sides throughout but Pelynt seemed to have the upper hand, Matt Johns, returning for his first full game after injury was magnificent in defence alongside Andy Giles, Phil Hearnden and Simon Hall who all help restrict Saints' scoring opportunities.

Pelynt went 1-0 up when the visitors were caught square at the back and Petrie won the race to the ball with the keeper and slotted home on 30 minutes.

In the second period Pelynt played five across midfield to frustrate St Mawes, Ian Dixon and Eddie Johns controlled the middle of the pack supported by Clive Wakeham, Paul Boxall and Wisker. Saints were caught square again with 15 minutes left and Petrie punished them again with another cool finish.

The visitors pulled a goal back with five minutes left to deny Ian Ede a clean sheet but Pelynt deservedly claimed all three points.

St Mawes will have an early chance for revenge when they host Pelynt tomorrow (Saturday) in the second round of the Division Two cup.
