This was a very physical game with both teams not wanting to give anything away. Southgate showed Callington too much respect in the first half sitting very deep allowing them to get hold of the ball and play their normal passing game. Tony Truscott saw a lot of ball wide right and feeding Taylor and Gregory up front caused all sorts of problems.

With Southgate sitting so deep there weren't many clear cut chances to note, except when Taylor was released by Brooks and he chipped the advancing keeper only to see the ball rebound off an upright. Southgate had their moments in the first half but only from the long ball over the top, which was dealt with by the town defence.

The second half started in the same manner but with 51 minutes gone Gregory was released by Griffiths and he made no mistake from eight yards. It was no more than Callington deserved but the game was about to change as after 60 minutes Tony Truscott was sent off for saying something to the linesman. This meant a big reshuffle for manager Paul Blatchford, moving Taylor back into midfield and changing Gregory for Chris Truscott.

This paid dividends as within two minutes of coming on following some good work from Taylor down the right his pin point cross found Truscott to tap in form from six yards. Southgate had to push on for the remaining 30 minutes and started to create chances, but Callington dug deep and defended with spirit. With 15 minutes remaining Southgate did pull one back when Lee Matthews headed in at the far post. It was very hard work for Town for the remaining minutes but every one worked for each other and cleared their lines when needed. However Southgate nearly equalised in the last minutes but Matthews' shot was well saved by Wormold.
