Further proof of St Cleer's ability to rise to the occasion came on Saturday when they visited Division 1 promotion candidates Mevagissey and come away with a credible draw to extend their run in the Duchy KO Cup.

On a pitch previously described by the writer as being like 'a monks head', and only last week described as atrocious by another writer in this reports section, it is to Mevagissey's credit that they stand where they do in their league table.

It was the visitors however who looked more at home in the first half of the first period, passing the ball around and pressing Mevagissey back and it almost seemed that the difference in league positions was the opposite way around.

Saints then made a mistake, they scored when a through ball saw Harvey react quickest, breaking the home defence to fire off a shot which the keeper could only parry in to the path of Truckle who beat a defender to the ball to slot home.

This proved to ignite the home team who stepped up the pace and showed their class and immediately put extended pressure on the Saints goal and after several near misses in the space of a few minutes a goal bound shot excellently saved by Roberts was push on to the post only for an attacker to react quickest to head home and bring the scores level.

The game then ebbed and flowed with half chances both ends with half time arriving with the scores still level. A slight change of tactics by Saints at half time tightened up the game and with every player doing their specific job properly and the squad knitting together well. Mevagissey were greatly restricted to half chances , and the clearest chance in the second period came the way of the visitors but the condition of the pitch contributed to the forgettable miss.

During the last 15 minutes the pressure began to tell on the home players as the expectation of a win change to nervousness of failure to get a result as Saints looked the more relaxed despite some 'funny' refereeing decisions which ended up requiring an extra five minutes of play to end the match and resulted in Mevagissey having to return to St Cleer in order to see who will proceed to the next round.
