St Stephens Borough earned another important three points in their quest for promotion with a deserved victory over St Breward, a result which delighted Borough Manager Marc Montell, a former St Breward player.
Montell sprung a tactical surprise in his line-up by fielding veteran striker Martin Crofts on the left hand side of midfield.
Crofts, realising he no longer possessed the pace to support the attack or the fitness to help out the defence, chose a compromise position which saw him spend most of the game stood on the halfway line.
With England crying out for a natural left hand side player this was a chance for Crofts to force himself into the national squad for the games against Scotland.
But by half time he's been replaced by a volunteer from Help The Aged! Borough started the better of the sides and dominated the opening 30 minutes with some attractive football.
Too often the final pass went astray and all they had to show for their domination was a headed goal from Nick Yeo, scored from a corner. The final 15 minutes belonged to the visitors, mainly due to borough over committing players forward in the search for
St Breward hit the bar, which should have served as a warning to Borough, before they equalised just before the break.
Borough Keeper Phil Bennett seemed to have gathered the ball before a well meaning but misguided supporter shouted 'Well Done Phil'. This distracted the keeper who dropped the ball at the feet of a St Breward striker who accepted the gift and equalised.
Playing against the wind in the second half Borough were up against it but they managed to recover some of their early domination.
Both their goals had an element of good fortune about them. First Chris Lewis put Borough back in front with a shot which seemed to take a deflection on its way in.
Then Rocky O'Rourke's cross from the right struck a St Breward defender giving the keeper no chance. Borough had enough chances to win the game comfortably but credit must go to the St Breward goalkeeper and the never say die attitude of the players in front of him. Borough will be delighted with the three points and with some of the football they produced.
