This was an inept performance from Saints in a game where they failed to make their strengths count against a Sticker team that was a shadow of the team knocked out of the Division Three cup a fortnight ago.
Basic statistics show that out of five chances, the visitors scored twice, whereas Saints failed to turn first half dominance against the wind, into effective penetration within the final third. After Sticker's second goal in the second half St Cleer disintegrated into a team playing ping pong with the defence clearing regularly only to get the ball coming straight back.
Both goals came as a result of unusually basic mistakes, and came at bad times as far as the course of the game was concerned. The first, after a defensive lapse, came five minutes before the break, when a Sticker forward pounced on to a through ball, to lob the advancing Duffey. The second after 15 minutes of the second half came when Saints seemed to be getting on top. A defensive call was completely misjudged to allow the ball to be slotted home in to an empty net.
Basic errors, appalling passing and bad control all contributed to the Saints worse display in weeks, and although injuries, illness and unavailability gave rise to a depleted squad and few options availability to the Manager tactically, this excuse could only wallpaper over the fact that the team did not perform. The atmosphere in the changing room afterwards reflected the weather; dower and downcast, with the threat of thunderstorms and winds to come!!
