In another game of blow football on a slippery pitch, Saints showed their character exacting revenge on a Barley side, who had previously knocked them out of cup plus having taken three points in the league. Saints did well to contain the majority of the play in Barley's half of the pitch but with all the slipping and the sliding when the ball was on the deck and the hit and hope when it went more than knee high meant for a very frustrating half only punctured on the half hour when Coleflax ran through to hit a good strike in to the bottom left hand corner to give home advantage of 1-0 at the break.
Plenty to talk about at the break and words were heeded, as Saints came out full of purpose and quickly doubled their lead when Taylor ran on to a through ball to slot pass the advancing keeper. At this point St Cleer settled down to play some good football considering the conditions, but an incident of handbags at 50 paces excellently dealt with by the referee, seemed to jolt them out of their rhythm and a case of a touch too many and a hospital back pass put Barley back in to the game with a well taken goal.
Once again settling to their task, Saints went further ahead when a miss hit corner from Perrett, skidded right across the penalty area, evading several pairs of mud caked legs to arrive at the feet of goal poacher par excellence (he asked me to put that), one Mr Julian Reynolds to slide home. Collins then got in on the act with more to follow, as Reynolds made it five.
A hat-trick duly arrived soon afterwards with a long range effort, which skidded along the ground and was fumbled in to the net by the Barley keeper. All this after he had only played one half thanks to his mean spirited manager. David Fairdough eat your heart out (Liverpool FC).
A back pass which was held up in the wind, provided the opportunity for Collins to grab his second as he was first to the ball and rounding the keeper and slotted the ball home in to an unguarded net.
