I NOTE from the Cornish Times that there are proposals for traffic calming in Castle Street, Liskeard, and possibly Pound Street and Higher Lux Street. Especially in Castle Street this is long overdue with the narrowness of the road. But surely a better method than speed bumps or similar is for a prohibition through Castle Street, Pound Street and Plymouth Road of HGVs and coaches. Only allow service buses through and HGVs to access promises. The prohibition could be from the roundabout on Plymouth Road to the roundabout at the Callington Road junction with Pound Street. There is an adequate alternative route via Charter Way and Callington Road. The prohibition is, to my mind, far more effective than traffic calming and probably cheaper. It is also noted that the Highways Agency is about to start on 'improving signing' at the A38 Menheniot intersection. Prior to this, the agency went to a public consultation which ended in the scheme previously suggested by the Highway Agency being confirmed. Tinkering with the signing is not enough. Physical changes are required, such as an elongated roundabout, to prevent traffic movements directly across the A38. I hope the propose signing changes will improve matters but I fear the carnage may well continue at this dangerous junction.
