Awards to community-minded citizens were made at the mayor of Saltash’s civic service.

Peter Clements was named the Saltash Citizen of the Year.

The former town councillor has been involved in a number of campaigns. These have included working towards the installation of the pedestrian bridge across the A38 at the Carkeel Roundabout. Peter has also championed various footpaths and rights of way around the town, has carried out research into names on war memorials and has collected for the Poppy Appeal.

Saltash Rotary Club president Brenda Samuels made the presentation to Peter and also announced a new environmental and community services award in partnership with the town council.

This went to Jon Foster, who three years ago began voluntarily clearing brambles and rubbish from the overgrown Coombe Woods. He has created new pathways, benches and havens for wildlife.

The Young Citizens Award went jointly to brother and sister Jack and Mia Rhodes who, having lost their grandfather to prostate cancer in 2014, have been fund-raising for the Chestnut Appeal at Derriford Hospital, Plymouth, in his memory.
