A local voluntary worker received a community award from Looe Valley Rotary Club in Trevelmond last week.

For more than 25 years, Joan Pearce was very involved with running a whole host of activities for different groups in the area.

They included Dobwalls Girls Brigade, Dobwalls Age Concern lunches (for which she bought food and cooked meals), Dobwalls Ladies Group and Mencap Gateway Club (where she helped people with learning difficulties and still regularly meets one lady after 40 years.)

She also regularly helped people in Trevelmond who were having difficulties, such as arranging tea and a chat for local people in their homes, and now in the chapel and community room.

Mrs Pearce had a severe stroke at the age of 70 and, with great determination, recovered her speech and mobility.

She is still regularly baking cakes and helping to serve refreshments at Manna in Liskeard Methodist Church at the age of 89.
