THE campaign by Looe people against the proposed closure of St Martin's Road for three months, while Barratt Homes carries out pipe laying works, has stepped up a notch.

Following on from the public meeting in the town's Guildhall in East Looe last week, attended by more than 200 people, a second meeting is to take place at Looe Bay Holiday Park, on Wednesday, December 21, at 6.30pm.

Cornwall Councillor Armand Toms is supporting the concerns of residents who claim real hardship for families, the elderly, businesses and the emergency services if such a closure of the main road were to take place,

On Tuesday evening, Mr Toms met with landowners, Barratt Homes and a representative from Cornwall Highways.

The possibility of an alternative route for the works was discussed without major disruption to the B3253 St Martin's Road, apart from some small amounts of closure during the night-time or at worst a few days with the roadworks being carried out under traffic lights.

'This idea has been taken forward with the technical advice of South West Water, planning and surveyors to see if this new plan is fit for the purpose' said Mr Toms.

'I am hoping this project will go ahead and give the best outcome for the town's residents and businesses.'

Cornwall Councillor for West Looe, Edwina Hannaford, said: 'Residents voiced their strong feeling in no uncertain terms at the last meeting and their message to Barratts and South West Water was that the people of Looe are saying "no" to such a long road closure.'
