Powergen Junior Vase Second round
Saltash 20 Falmouth 50
The contest was as good as over in the first half hour as Falmouth took a grip of the game with four tries. Hooker Scott Langdon went over in the first minute, full back Jack Brown coverted and then scored and converted one himself. Lock Chris Snell and flanker Tom Horne soon added to the tally. Saltash came back towards the end of the half with some prolonged possession, though they rarely threatened the Falmouth line. Into the second period, there was more purpose about the home side and from the kick off they attacked deep into the Falmouth half to produce a try from No8 Peter Congo on 42 minutes. Falmouth came back again and a sublime angle saw centre Adie Matthews go in under the posts for Brown to convert and the lead was extended to 31 -5. Almost immediately Saltash hit back and excellent handling saw Congo go over in the corner for his second try. Falmouth struck back again immediately from the kick off as they went blind and a four on one overlap saw wing James Instance go over unopposed from half way in the 51st minute. This was to prove the start of another purple patch for Falmouth as two further tries in the 56th and 57th minutes saw Rich Warricker and Tom Spiller go over for Brown to convert both and the score was up to 50. That was where the Falmouth scoring finished as the last 20 belonged to Saltash, who increased their power up front and in the lineout, as well as stringing a few moves together. This produced some good field position and a try in the 76th minute from full back Simon Watson made it 50-15. Then on the stroke of full time, a well-driven maul from 10 yards out saw impact player Rob Saxby at the bottom of the heap for the try and 50-20. It was a tough game for the home side against a Cornwall and Devon League side likely to be challenging for honours this term. To score four tries was a plus, though Saltash will need to tighten up in defence.
