IN response to Mr Flowers' letter (Cornish Times, July 1) I would like to say that I think he underestimates the intelligence of our young people in Liskeard. When the police wrote to the Cornish Times and the paper had a front page article the message went out strong and clear: we, the public will not put up with anti-social drinking in town. That weekend it was as if we had had our lives turned about, we were able to sit outside in the garden and not suffer the stupid speeding idiots noisily blasting from Westbourne to Rapsons and back again to the Cattle Market. I have written to the police to keep on putting out this message and it is up to all of us to communicate how we feel quite clearly to young people. They do understand and they can see the problems once they have been made aware of them. Continuity is all. If we continue to promote a civilised, healthy and safe environment then things may improve. What we must be careful of is putting down those people who are making an effort - however politically driven it may be - to make things better. We mustn't give up and shrug our shoulders wishing for better. This is it, this is what we have, let's build on it, not knock it.
