Crowds turned out in Saltash on a cold night for the town’s Kalan Gwav Festival, a new event which it is hoped will become an annual celebration.

Kalan Gwav is an ancient Celtic tradition which marks the beginning of winter and pays homage to the apple harvest.

The event, held on the Warfelton Field, included a number of apple-related activities, including a wassail led by ’the guardian of the apples’, apple bobbing, juice pressing and a bake-off competition with apple recipes.

A beacon was lit by Bill Dent. There was also a scarecrow competition, a warming hog roast, stalls and music from Calstock’s Rubber Band and the Burraton Male Voice Choir.

The event ended with a spectacular fireworks display.
