A HOTEL'S drinks licence has been revoked after neighbours suffered abuse, nuisance, disorder, litter and anti-social behaviour. Police in Liskeard this week successfully applied to Caradon District Council for the cancellation of the licence for the town's Lord Eliot Hotel and Smokey's bar, along with the designated premises supervisors' licence for proprietor Mrs Mary Lundon. For the first time in Caradon, the council's licensing sub committee on Wednesday voted unanimously in favour of the revocation after hearing the application by Sector Inspector John Turner, supported by the Local Safeguarding Children Board, Liskeard Town Council and Caradon District Council's environmental services department and members of the public. Insp Turner said he had taken the unusual step of seeking full revocation of the licence in the light of the 'abuse, nuisance, disorder, litter and anti-social behaviour generated from the Lord Eliot and Smokey's bar over the period the current management structure has been in place.' In particular, Insp Turner cited the 'flagrant' breach of many of the licence conditions last Christmas Day night and in the early hours of Boxing Day which had resulted in a large-scale disorder in the premises spilling outside, resulting in the arrest of 30 people for a range of offences linked to violence. He said: 'The overriding factors contributing to the disorder were the failure of the management and staff to control the sale of alcohol. Many were drunk, yet were still served.' Mrs Lundon has 21 days in which to appeal against the decision – the licence will not be revoked until that period has expired and will remain in place if an appeal is lodged. She was not prepared to comment on the decision at the time of going to press.
