ANOTHER big-name store looks set to move into the area – following the plans already announced by Lidl (Saltash) and Aldi (Liskeard). Now Callington could provide a key site on the outskirts of town, which is likely to attract one of the big four supermarkets. At the town council meeting cllr Chris Thomas said that proposed planning permission for a supermarket, on Tavistock Road, should be submitted in January, with development to start around May, as long as things go as planned. Cllr Thomas said after the meeting the council had hoped that an Asda would be built, but the size of the plot had been changed from 35,000 sq ft to 25,000 sq ft because of government rulings. The application is due to be submitted by a developer who will be seeking to attract interest from the various supermarket chains. Cllr Thomas said: 'We were hoping for an Asda, mainly because of the clothing side as there are no clothing shops in Callington and they are especially good for school uniforms, but now we don't know. 'A shopping survey found that around 80 per cent of Callington residents shop outside of the town. 'Hopefully a new supermarket will kick start the town's retail trade and keep people from leaving the town to go shopping.' A spokesperson for Walker Developments, the Newquay-based company behind the development bid, said the scheme was at an early stage but he confirmed that an application could be submitted to Caradon District Council in the New Year. 'There is an awful lot of information to put together and the timescale for the project is vague. 'At this stage in the application, it is difficult to determine which supermarket it will be but we are confident that it will be one of the big four.'
