Farmers from around the county will be hoping to collect some silverware at the 97th annual Liskeard and District Prime Stock Show which takes place in the Cattle Market tomorrow, October 27.
As is tradition the Liskeard event is the first of the winter shows in the South West, and is a good indication to judges of the quality to expect in the showing season.
The honour as this year’s president falls to well-known farmer Dennis Julian, from Lansallos.
There are open and local cattle classes, sheep classes, which last year attracted a higher entry than in recent years, and also classes for Young Farmers Club members.
A competition for hay, silage and roots also features with the exhibitor gaining most points being awarded the ICI Perpetual Forage Cup.
The most sought after accolade is the title of Champion Beast of the Show, with the recipient being presented with The Gordon Shepherd Perpetual Cup.
The event’s domestic classes will once again be at the town’s Eliot House Hotel, which is open to the public from 10.30am on show day.
Classes covering grain, potatoes, vegetables, eggs, cookery, floral art, handicrafts, painting, children’s and young adult classes attract hundreds of entries making a colourful display for the many visitors.
As usual there will be a hotly-contested competition among local WIs for their co-operative entry, which this year will be on the theme of a special celebration.
Young Farmers Clubs also have a co-operative class with the title ‘A Guy Fawkes Party.’
Presentation of cups will take place at 3.30pm on show day.
