CALLINGTON’S colourful MayFest is back for the sixth year on Sunday, May 20, with pirates, vikings, music, dance and fun for all ages.

Hundreds of musicians and dancers are ready to perform in seven venues around the town, and the day promises everything from traditional Cornish song and dance, to displays from visiting European dancers, and performances by local choirs and contemporary singers.

The main central stage in Fore Street will provide a focal point for the day’s events.

Other venues include the Town Hall, the second stage at the Co-op, St Mary’s Church, the Methodist Church, and the yard of The Bull’s Head.

The Artisan Market has double the number of stalls booked on last year, so there will be plenty to browse and buy, and children’s entertainment has also been enhanced.

Another new attraction will be Viking reenactment from Drengskapt Hird, bringing history to life with their energetic displays of public fighting.

And pirates will also be abroad in Callington, as The Captain’s Beard encourage the audience to join in with rousing sea shanties.

A road closure in Fore Street and New Road will begin at 7.30am to allow for the erection of the staging as well as the numerous stalls which will form a craft market in New Road. Roads will re-open at 7pm.

Performances will begin at 10am and continue throughout the day and will include morris dancers, musicians, choirs, story-tellers, and a fun town criers contest featuring visiting criers from the southwest.

A grand finale at 4pm will see all the performers together with members of the public form a ‘giant serpent’ to dance through the town centre.

There’s a preview in this week’s print edition of the Cornish Times, on sale now.
