Brunel's bust in North Road has been cleared of brambles and the area will be floodlit in time for April 9 when an official opening will be held, members of Saltash Brunel Committee heard. Chairman Joe Ellison also announced the return of the Brunel plaque, originally on Saltash Railway station in 1959 and later moved to the Plymouth side of the Royal Albert Bridge. It will be returned to Saltash next Friday, March 17, and will be placed at Huntley Gardens in a prominent position near the pillars of the Royal Albert Bridge. Huntley Gardens will be opened on April 8 as a Waterside residents' project. Devon and Cornwall Rail Partnership has agreed to pay for a brochure to commemorate the special events in April to celebrate Brunel's birthday. Saltash Amateur Radio Club is to set up a station in the Maurice Huggins room on Saturday and Sunday, April 8-9, with a special call sign to mark the event. David Kent spoke about the Saltash Heritage Exhibition on Brunel, which will have the title On The Right Track. The exhibition will open on April 1 at the museum. Saltash Heritage has organised an art competition. The winning entry will be printed as a postcard and sold in the museum. Entries will be displayed in the Local History Centre for a week from April 1. Maureen Fuller and Lorraine Cabello, of Brunel CP School, spoke about the four county primary schools presenting an educational event, possibly in Longstone Park in June. This will involve dancing, artistic displays and music. Brunel CP School Saltash has £5,000 from the Awards for All fund. Another Brunel project will be a window display competition in Fore Street.
