POLICE have confirmed that two towns in the area are in need of an alcohol ban on their streets. Liskeard and Looe, which are currently in the processing of applying for alcohol-free zones have received support from the Devon and Cornwall police's Crime Reduction Partnership. Looe Town Council applied for an alcohol-free zone after its existing ban ran out in September 2006 due to a change in legislation. Liskeard Town Council also applied for a ban of alcohol on its town centre streets in September 2006, covering north towards the top of The Parade and south as far as Rapsons Field. The proposed alcohol-free zone also covers Castle Park to the east and Thorn Park to the west. Liskeard and Looe Town Councils needed the police to look back over crime records to support their cases before submitting them to Caradon District Council. John Turner, sector Inspector for Liskeard and Looe, said this week that the police had found sufficient evidence to suggest that an alcohol ban was needed and if the ban applications were successful he felt the lives of the residents within the two towns would be improved. The ban will now go to Caradon District Council for a decision to be made.
