YOUNG people have recorded a message of peace with a call to action on the environment to be sent out across the world today.
The message in Welsh has been translated into 57 different languages including Cornish and English.
Wales’ youth organisation the Urdd Gobaith Cymru has been sending an annual message of Peace and Goodwill since 1922. The first was conveyed in Morse Code, and later it became a radio broadcast on the BBC World Service, then television, and more recently on social media.
Today’s message, telling leaders around the world that ’coronavirus has stopped the clock and it’s time to wake up, act now and be resopnsible for our future’ has also been made into a one-minute film featuring more than 30 young people.
’The global reaction to Covid19 has brought a renewed sense of urgency and ambition to some of the most intractable issues of our times - poverty, inequality, homelessness, climate change, conspicuous consumption, unnecessary car use and air travel,’ said a spokesperson.
’The message calls on the world not to forget those issues as the virus recedes. ’
Chief executive of Urdd Gobaith Cymru, Siân Lewis, said: ’The Covid19 crisis has been a huge and painful challenge to all of us. We’ve witnessed devastating loss of life and livelihood.
’Yet the global response to the threat has been impressive and the forced separation it imposed on us has paradoxically brought all of us closer. In many ways, the crisis brought out the best in our commitment to our communities, our common values and humanity and our young people are determined that political leaders do not drop those commitments.’

To the people of the world
Nature has shaken us – awakened us
We are wasting needlessly
We are travelling needlessly
To the young people of the world
The time has come for thanks
Thankyou to the front line workers
Who’ve been our lifeline
Together we can create a better future
A future of caring for ourselves and others
A future of caring for the less fortunate in our communities
A future of caring for our planet
It’s time to act
Dear leaders of the world
Coronavirus has stopped the clock
Listen to the young people of Wales and the world standing together
Act now and be responsible for our future
The world has awoken
Now you must wake up too
