AT 11 o'clock on Friday, November 11, 2005, Caradon staff will pause and remember those who gave their lives in two world wars and in more than 70 other conflicts so that we can enjoy peace and freedom. Our staff are being advised and public notices displayed accordingly, but participation will be for individuals to decide as a matter of personal conscience. 2005 marks the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II and is the last major chance to thank all those ordinary men and women who went on to do extraordinary things 60 years ago. Not just those on the frontlines, but all the millions of people who worked hard at home and abroad for the war effort and to remember all those who played a part in the hard-won victory. But the two-minute silence is not just about remembering the sacrifice of World War II or the millions who suffered as a result of World War I. It is also a timely reminder of today's heroes, all those who serve in conflicts and peace-keeping missions across the globe. May I take the opportunity through these columns to encourage all in our community to give generously once again to ensure a successful Poppy Day appeal in our district at this time of remembrance.
