As we all celebrate Christmas Day, here is a seasonal message for Cornish Times readers from the Rev Andy Day, the Liskeard and Looe Methodist Superintendent:

FRIENDS, when December comes around, we again dare to hope that the perfect gifts will be in stock and in the sale, that there will be plenty of turkey and tinsel, minimal sprouts, no such thing as arguments, and, of course, that it will snow.

Yet there are years when Christmas Day doesn’t live up to our hopes and dreams.

The years of three orange jumpers, the years of the turkey still cooking on Boxing Day, and the years of playing (Devon) Monopoly with Aunt Maude!

It’s then that we need to remind ourselves that this is merely what we have let Christmas become and that there is so much more to it than this.

Christmas is about God’s gift to us: Jesus, His son.

If we can let this be true for us then Christmas will no longer be about jumpers or turkey, or Aunt Maude, because it isn’t about us, it is about Jesus being with us.

So, let me invite you to come and join the celebration.

What part in the nativity will you choose this year?

Will you be Mary bearing the baby Jesus; Joseph caring for the holy family; a shepherd finding the baby in the manger; an angel singing praises to God; or a wise man traversing afar to bring Jesus gifts?

Why not join us in our worship of the Christ child at any of your local Stables?

Fancy dress is welcome, orange jumpers included.Every blessing to you all.Rev Andy Day
