Emergency services have been battling a major blaze at a scrapyard near the A38, with plumes of smoke seen from miles away and residents urged to stay inside and close their windows.

The road next to the scene at WH Orchard and Sons vehicle scrapyard near Dobwalls is closed while firefighters from all over Cornwall tackle the fire.

Crews from Bodmin, Wadebridge, Callington, Looe, Launceston, St Austell, Newquay and St Dennis were all fighting the flames.

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service said: ’In total we have five pumps, two water carriers, one aerial ladder platform, one support vehicle, one incident command unit, one welfare unit and four flexi officers in attendance.

’The high volume pump from Newquay has been requested and mobilised to the scene.’
