LOOE’S lifeboat crew have implored people enjoying the water to tie up their equipment afterwards after the second call out in a month to kayaks that have floated away.

Falmouth coastguard received a call reporting an empty kayak drifting off the end of Looe’s second beach.

On inspecting on foot, the team could not reach the inlet to see if there was anyone in difficulty, so the inshore lifeboat was launched. Once the crew had ascertained there was no one in the water, the lifeboat returned to station with the kayak.

Looe RNLI Lifeboat Operations Manager Dave Haines, said: “The first informants did the right thing in contacting the coastguard as there could have been people in difficulties in the water.

“This is our second shout within the last month to drifting kayaks in the vicinity of Plaidy beach. There were reports of three kayaks being washed off the beach during the stormy weather last weekend.”

The RNLI recommends that owners of kayaks stored close to the shore make sure their kayaks are firmly secured to the storage racking or railings, or better still removed from the beach for winter storage.
