Students at Saltash Community School were locked down in their classrooms this morning following what the school has described as a ’potentially serious incident’.

Police were called to the site, said a school spokesperson.

In a short comment, Devon and Cornwall Police said: "We were called to Saltash Community School at around 9.30am this morning with a request to review a wooden object brought in by a pupil. The matter was left with the school’s senior management."The school said: "In reponse to a potentially serious incident today, we had to follow our lockdown procedure. We know that this was distressing for the children, but we were able to resolve the situation within 20 minutes.

"We can confirm that the site is now safe and we are operating as normal.

We were very proud of the way the students responded to this unexpected event."
