Police say incidences of domestic abuse increase during the summer months: while a holiday or break from work may offer respite to many, sadly this may not be the case for people in an abusive relationship.
Whether local or from outside the region, Devon and Cornwall Police are encouraging those suffering from abuse to seek help, either directly from police or from one of the regional support agencies.
Friends and family who may suspect that someone they know is being abused can learn about the signs of abuse to encourage victims to seek help.
Detective Superintendent, Ben Deer, of Devon and Cornwall Police said: ‘It is a sad fact that people suffer from domestic abuse, even when on holiday.
‘Domestic abuse can affect anyone and takes many forms and it is important that people recognise abuse and know that help is available to get them out of an abusive situation. Whether resident or visitor to Devon and Cornwall, we want people to know that we can help. If people don’t want to speak to police, our partner agencies can help.’
Both police and partner agencies provide advice and support. Information about the help and support available can be found at www.domesticabusehelp.co.uk. You can also call the National Domestic Abuse Helpline on 0808 2000247
In an emergency, always call 999.
