A TOWN council is considering taking a legal step to reduce anti-social behaviour.
For several years there have been problems such as littering and noise reported at Callington’s Saltash Road car park.
Some nearby residents have said they find it difficult to sleep properly, with revving engines and the sound of cars doing ‘doughnuts’ on the car park.
In the past, the Town Council has installed a camera as well as paying a security company to carry out checks.
Now the Council is asking people if it should adopt a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) for the site.
This would effectively ban certain types of behaviour, and give police and council staff the ability to enforce or move people on.
‘A PSPO restricts behaviour considered anti-social by others,’ said clerk Helen Dowdall.
‘But the first thing we have to do is consult with local people.’
One option the council has considered previously is closing the car park at night - but members have felt reluctant to take this action, said Helen.
The 24 hour free car park is a ‘real asset to the town’ she said, and ‘it would seem a shame to let the minority ruin it for the majority’.
There could be costs to the Council associated with implementing a PSPO, said the clerk, and with implying staff to enforce the legislation.
A poll will be carried out to establish the feelings of residents on the matter.
