TWO people were rescued from the rocks with waves breaking just beneath them after getting cut off by the tide between Looe and Millendreath.

Coastguard and lifeboat crew were alerted to the incident at around 3pm on Wednesday. After launching the inshore lifeboat, the volunteer crew located the two people sitting just above the breaking waves on the cliff below Kellow, between Plaidy and Millendreath.

“Our crew attempted to extract the casualties by veering down (setting an anchor and reversing the boat in) towards the cliff face, but due to rocks in front of the location, a rough four foot swell from the incoming tide and force 3 – 4 south easterly wind, two attempts to reach them were unsuccessful,” said a Looe Lifeboat Station spokesperson.

“The Looe Coastguard Rescue team were on scene at Millendreath and a decision was made to get the casualties out with a technical cliff rope rescue from the cliff top. Our crew were requested to stand by offshore to provide location information and safety cover for the rope rescue teams.”

A spokesperson for Looe Coastguard said: “We decided that the best course of action was to execute a technical cliff rescue accessing the cliff via one of the cliff top properties. The Polruan Coastguard team was tasked to provide backup and additional resources and support the rescue.

“The RNLI remained on station just off the cliff face and provided important location information back to the team that allowed them to position their equipment immediately above the casualties. Both people were extracted by the rope rescue teams and taken back to the cliff top where medical support was provided.”
