Barn fire

Firefighters from Lostwithiel, Callington and Liskeard attended a barn fire at Upton Cross last Thursday evening just after l0pm.

The firemen wore breathing apparatus, and used jet hose reels.

Smoke inhalation

A fire, which broke out at a house in Melbourne Road, Liskeard, on Thursday morning, after a chip pan caught fire, led to an elderly man being treated for smoke inhalation.

The fire had been put out by the time firefighters arrived.

Community service for Looe clerk

Liskeard Magistrates sentenced former clerk to Looe Harbour Commissioners, Adrian Sargent, to 180 hours of community service, plus £60 costs on Wednesday.

An application for compensation was turned down.

Sargent, aged 50, of Hannafore Lane, West Looe, had pleaded guilty to charges of theft and false accounting at a trial in Bodmin in March.

He was suspended from his job after falling under suspicion due to queries raised over the amounts in the accounts spent on postage, and was finally dismissed on January 15, this year.

Sargent had been in the employment of the Harbour Commissioners for 30 years, 20 of them spent as the clerk.

Bomb team was called

A momb disposal team from Didcot was called to Portwrinkle harbour on Saturday after a member of the public reported a smoke marker amongst some crab pots.

The unit disposed of the marker.

Coastguards busy at Whitsand Bay

Tamar Coastguards were called to two incidents in the Freathy area of Whitsand Bay, on Tuesday.

The first was just before 1.30pm in the afternoon to help in the rescue of a 42 year old woman who had fallen on the coastal path near Freathy.

She was transferred to Derriford Hospital by Air Ambulance.

The coastguards together with an RNLI Lifeboat from Plymouth were tasked to Freathy Beach a few hours later at 5.10pm where persons were reported to have been cut off by the tide.

The area was searched and it was confirmed that those involved had made their own way to safety.

People and dogs rescued

Six people and three dogs, cut off by the tide at Sharrow Point, Whitsand Bay, were recovered by the Tamar Coastguard boat, on Monday, which was on patrol at the time.

Accident at Looe junction

Traffic flow on the busy A38 was disrupted during the peak travel to work period on Thursday morning, when a lorry and a car collided on the West bound carriageway just after 8am at the Looe turn off.

There were no injuries but Cornwall Highways were called to clear the road of diesal spillage and other debris. All was clear by 9.05am.

Teenager is attacked in Looe

Liskeard CID are appealing for witnesses after an 18-year-old man was attacked in Looe, by more than one person, and left with a fractured jaw.

The incident happened in the early hours of Saturday April 29, around 1am. D C Iain Matthews of Liskeard CID said it is believed the assault took place at the Guildhall end of Fore Street, East Looe.

An ambulance was called and the teenager was taken to hospital. DC Matthews would like to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or knows anything about it.
