A large milk distribution depot in South East Cornwall looks set to close down, with 58 jobs under threat. Muller Wiseman Dairies, a nationwide company which operates its Devon and Cornwall deliveries from a unit on the Pensilva industrial estate in St Ive Road, has confirmed that it has begun a 30 days' statutory consultation on the future of its most westerly operation. Shocked workers at the depot, along with site manager Ian England, were unable to make any comment, but confirmed that their interests were being represented by USDAW (the Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers). David Johnson, USDAW's National Officer, representing workers on the site, said: 'We are deeply concerned at the situation, and we will examine the business case in detail. 'This is a difficult and worrying time for the staff and we will do all we can to support our members.' Carl Ravenhall, managing director at Muller Wiseman, said: 'We have a very strong network of depots and dairies throughout the country but we must adapt to changes in the market we serve. 'We operate in a very competitive environment and it is right that we properly review the viability of this depot going forward, taking the views and ideas of our employees and their representatives into account over the next month, before arriving at a decision.' The company said some customers no longer needed deliveries directly to their stores, but added that any change would not affect local farmers. The depot has been at Pensilva for more than 20 years, having first been opened by Newlands Farm at Upton Cross. It then passed to Robert Wiseman, who sold out to German yoghurts and other dairy products company Muller and the business was renamed Muller Wiseman Daries.
