JIMMY Mullen, a former student of Duchy College Stoke Climsland, clinched second place at the Daily Telegraph Abu Dhabi Junior Golf Championship.
The youngster, who studied the Level Two Diploma in Sport at the College last year, and Amy Boulden both recorded opening-round 69s to lead in the 2011 event.
Mullen's group raced through 18 holes in searing temperatures at the Abu Dhabi National.
Boulden outshone many of the boys for most of the day until Jimmy, from Bideford in Devon and playing in the last boys' group of the day, birdied the 18th to match the leader, Daniel Hendry, at three under par in the boys' event.
The only blemish for the 17-year-old – who plays at Royal North Devon – came courtesy of a double bogey on the par four 14th. This hole proved the most difficult of the day, with others following suit to hit sevens.
Mullen, who plays off a plus-two handicap, admitted: 'The wind was swirling the whole time and it was hard to guess.'
