THE cricket world has been stunned by the sudden death of Callington chairman and former player Peter Moores.

Peter, who in his heyday was a medium-fast bowler whose wicked deliveries were feared the length and breadth of Cornwall, died at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro on Monday, having been taken ill the previous day.

Sir Robert Hicks, South East Cornwall's former Conservative MP, who was a close friend of Peter's, described him as an outstanding cricketer and true stalwart of Callington Cricket Club.

'He was a player, groundsman and committee man as well as the club's long-serving chairman,' said Sir Robert, who is also president of the club.

'In all the years I've known him, I've never heard anyone utter a critical word about him. He was simply a smashing chap.'
