CAMBORNE visit Dings Crusaders in Bristol tomorrow afternoon (3pm) aiming to continue their sensational start to their debut season in National League One.

The Cherry and Whites have lost just once in seven games – that to leaders Plymouth Albion – but bar that fruitless outing have racked up an impressive 30 points from a possible 35.

Key to that has been their away form which has seen them win four from four, and they start as favourites against a home side that sit second bottom in the standings.

From their impressive success over Sale FC last time out, there are three alterations to the Camborne starting 15.

Prolific winger Alex Ducker is fully over his head knock at Sheffield and comes in ahead of veteran Matt Shepherd in the only change to the backline, while up front there is a first start of the season for powerhouse youngster Ben Woodmansey in place of Jon Drew. Barnaby Waddell is away with Canada as Adam Hughes gets a recall.

Coming into the 20-man squad from 13 days ago are flanker Barnaby Elderkin and scrum-half CJ Boyce.

Dings have just a win and a draw to their name, but their tally of 250 points scored from their seven outings is just five less than Camborne and the best of the rest outside of the top five. However, they have conceded over 40 points a game on average, which points to a high-scoring afternoon at Shaftesbury Park.

Explaining the selection, Kessell said: “Barnaby is away with Canada so Adam comes in for him, while the 3G pitch suits Ducky’s (Alex Ducker) game. It’s tough on Matt as he’s done well recently, particularly defensively.

“We’ve also given a first start of the season to Ben at prop. He’s a man who just gets on with his job and we also feel the surface will suit his game, so we’re excited to see what he does.”

Kessell admits it’s not easy keeping a squad that happy which will see the likes of Shepherd, Ben Priddey, Rory O’Kane and Declan Prowse all line up for the seconds at Truro in Counties One Western West. The thirds visit Truro Development in a friendly tonight (7pm).

He continued: “With where we are at the moment and where we’re going as a club, there’s so much competition for places which means you’re never going to keep everybody happy, and it’s not going to get any easier.

“For example, Ben Priddey has been a cornerstone of the side for the last few years, but he needs minutes so he’ll be with the seconds tomorrow.

“Yes it’s tough as a coach having these conversations at times, but on the flip side we’re sending out three teams this weekend which is incredible when you consider six or seven years ago we had just 16 or 17 at training.”

On the challenge Dings provide, Kessell knows it won't be easy.

He said: “They’re a team that play well on the 3G, and at home they’ve lost just once from their three games, so we’re expecting it to be tight as it usually is in their games. They seem to have changed a bit from the classic old Dings sides of recent times, but like any team in this league, they’ll be a good side.

“The other thing we’ve got to get right is our mental preparation. We’re going up on the day which is the first time we’ll have done that this season, but after a weekend off it’s nice to get back to it.”

One disappointing bit of news for the club is that versatile back three player Harry Larkins has joined neighbours Redruth.

The exciting try-merchant has struggled for game time so far this season and joins the Reds who are unbeaten and top of the table in National League Two West.

Kessell added: “Harry has gone to Redruth and we wish him all the best. It’s a bit of a blow for us, but the door is always open if he wants to return.”
