DOBWALLS were rewarded for withstanding a Bude Town first half barrage with three late goals as they ran out 3-1 winners at Broadclose Park on Wednesday night.
The Dingos headed to the North Cornwall coast bottom of the table, and after being under the pump for much of the first half, fell behind five minutes before half-time when former player Ray Spear found the top corner from inside the box from Piran Friend’s ball in. He had earlier shot over from inside the six-yard box, as did winger Harrison Swatton.
The Seasiders lost goalkeeper Leam Powell at half-time after failing to recover from a leg injury sustained in the first half, but continued to be in the ascendency after the break, that was until they were pegged back 20 minutes from time as Jamie Gilbert slotted home from the penalty spot after Elian Causon was fouled by home skipper Harry Hopcroft.
George Hann soon completed the turnaround when his deflected effort found its way in, and after Bude missed a host of chances to equalise, Morgan Jones headed in Gilbert’s cross in added time.
Dobwalls manager Kevin McCann admitted they were slow out of the blocks, but hailed their response.
He said: “It was a very poor first half from us - probably the worst we've played all season, kept giving the ball away instead of playing, not following our men and just letting Bude play.
“Bude were very good, passing and moving and gaining in confidence as we kept giving them the ball back. They spent most of the first 45 minutes in our half without creating too many chances, and taking quite a few shots from distance. But the way it was going it was only a matter of time before they got a deserved lead.
“To get to the break only one goal behind was the only positive thing from that half, so we had to totally reset and come out with a much better attitude, more desire and most importantly, up the intensity. Thankfully, the lads did just that.
“It was a much more even half and we were looking dangerous going forward, playing much better football and got our reward with the penalty.
“We kept pushing, missing some very good chances which did give me a bit of a deja vu feeling, but we soon got the second. We then had to withstand some pressure as they desperately tried to get the equaliser, but Morgan’s header meant I could finally relax.”
The result saw the Dingos climb off the bottom.
McCann continued: “We've really turned a corner; not necessarily in performances but in taking our chances and winning games. That's two wins and one draw from our last three league games which I'm determined to keep going.
“Getting off the foot of the table is also massive as it also gives us a big confidence boost, and with Sticker visiting on Saturday it comes just at the right time.
“I'm convinced we can continue to climb the table, as I have been all season, so now we just need to keep this run going and bring a much better feeling to the whole club.”
Seasiders boss Steve Hackett criticised his side’s ‘decision-making’ in the final third.
He said: “To be honest I’m really frustrated and disappointed after last night. I felt we played really well, but if you don’t take your chances, then you’re not going to get results. So that’s the reality of it.
“We’ve got to take lessons from the game and put things right.
“But the main take away from last night was that our decision-making was poor. Too many times we shot when we should have passed or passed when we should have taken a shot.”
He continued: “Last night was a setback, but thankfully there’s a quick turnaround to Saturday so the players can learn from last night and take our chances at Penzance.”
