A member of Liskeard Junior and Inclusive Badminton Club is celebrating a tremendous run of medals.

Nikki Welch from Pensilva kicked off her winning streak with a gold medal for ladies' doubles and a silver medal for ladies' singles in the Four Nation Challenge in Cardiff, playing against players from Scotland, Ireland and Wales.

She also won a gold for ladies' singles in Bournemouth, winning all four games against players from Bournemouth, Birmingham, Isle of Wight and Sutton Coldfield, dropping only 13 points in all four matches.

Her final gold was in a friendly match playing for Devon against Cornwall where she won all five matches.

Nikki, who has Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and a learning disability, recently joined Liskeard Junior and Inclusive Badminton Club which is thrilled to have her. As a member of Special Olympics Cornwall, the club is keen to support Nikki as much as possible to help her achieve her goals.

Nikki will be travelling to Scotland in February for another Four Nation Challenge tournament with her ultimate goal being the Olympics.

Another club member in medal-winning mode is Liskeard School and Community College student Cara Collins whose medal was won at the U15 Devon Bronze at Exeter University.

The club says this is a tremendous achievement for 11-year-old Cara who was playing opponents much older than herself and has three more years within the U15 age group.

Meanwhile fellow Liskeard School and Community College student Ellie Reed won medals in Birmingham at the U15 West Midlands Bronze. She achieved a bronze medal in the girls' singles event and went on to claim a gold medal in the girls' doubles with her partner May Burke from Warwickshire. Both Ellie and Cara play for Cornwall Youth Badminton.

Liskeard Junior and Inclusive Badminton Club is East Cornwall's only Premier Club which is awarded through Badminton England recognising standards and good practices.

The club has now added a pay and play session to their itinerary – No Strings Badminton at Lux Park, Liskeard, on Mondays, 6.30pm to 7.30pm, at £3 per person.

These sessions have been funded by East Cornwall Community Badminton Network and will be run voluntarily by the coaches of the junior and inclusive club with any profits made being given to the club.

The club is looking for sponsorship to help its members compete and if any local businesses are interested, please get in touch.
