LOOE Rowing Club's Cornish Pilot Gig crews sprang the surprise of the World Championship weekend by securing a terrific second place in the men's event.

While the Falmouth crew in Black Rock pulled to overall victory, Looe's young crew in Talisman ousted the Saltash-based Caradon, in Amazon, from the runners-up berth.

The 23rd annual Worlds attracted more than 3,000 people to Scilly but few of them were happier than the rowers from Falmouth, who clinched a men and women's double, and the Looe contingent, who produced their best-ever display.

Jamie Chudleigh and Mike White's young charges were simply outstanding, breaking the Caradon-Falmouth grip on the sport with a superb display, which augurs well not only for this season but for future World Championships as well.
