ST Mellion amateur ace Sammie Giles has completed a famous English women’s golf hat-trick, writes Ross Reid.

The 21-year-old Saltash based golf star was the only player to break par after four testing rounds when she won the English Women’s Amateur Championship at windblown West Lancashire.

Giles’ one under par 295 total over 72 holes meant she pipped fellow England international Lizzie Prior to the closed title and in doing so completed a unique hat-trick having already won the English Women’s Stroke Play at St Anne’s Old Links last summer and the English mid-amateur title at Bath in 2014.

There’s much more on this and other local golf in this week’s Cornish Times, on sale now.
