Memories of last season’s League Two play-off semi-final clashes between Argyle and Portsmouth will come flooding back this afternoon when the sides meet in the 100th Dockyard Derby at Home Park (3pm), writes Kevin Marriott.
And thoughts of promotion will again be at the forefront of the minds of both sets of supporters with the teams already established in the top six of this season’s table.
Of course Argyle, after a poor start, have set a hot pace and are top of the pile with a five point lead following last weekend’s 2-1 win at Stevenage.
But Pompey are not far behind, sitting fourth and knowing a win tomorrow will move them to within five points of top spot.
Argyle, of course, are in particularly high spirits themselves, and the character they showed in winning at Stevenage underlined why they are setting the pace in the division.
Central defender Sonny Bradley grabbed the headlines for his unusual hat-trick – an own goal off his shin as well as Argyle’s two – but manager Derek Adams felt Jordan Slew was the biggest influence on the result.
Slew, playing in a wide attacking role, gave the Stevenage defence plenty to think about with his bursts of pace.
While the first team are making waves in League Two, the Pilgrims’ reserves continue to lead the way in the Carlsberg South West Peninsula League premier division after a hard fought 1-1 draw with city neighbours Plymouth Parkway on Tuesday night.
Alex Battle looked to have sealed all three points for Argyle with a 74th minute goal in front of a crowd of 636 at Bolitho Park, but Josh Zimmerman’s 88th minute strike earned the home side a draw.
