Saltash United 6 Axminster Town 0
Saltash cruised through to the FA Vase third qualifying round with an emphatic victory over Axminster at Kimberley Stadium on Saturday.
The Ashes virtually killed off the tie in the opening 33 minutes as they established a 4-0 lead and they added two more goals before the hour mark.
Dave Trott scored twice, including a penalty, and other goals came from Richard Maddison, Henry Wilson, Dave Barker and man of the match Sam Hughes.
Credit to Axminster – the Carlsberg South West Peninsula League division one east side stuck to their passing game and never let their heads drop against a superior premier division outfit.
Having conceded very early goals in some recent games, Saltash were relieved that there was little action in their penalty area in the opening minutes and they swept into the lead after seven minutes when Maddison finished off a Hughes run and cross from the right.
Hughes was the provider again in the 24th minute, this time for Trott, and it was 3-0 a minute later when Wilson cut in from the left to fire home a low right foot shot.
Hughes finally got the goal he deserved after 33 minutes when he latched onto a superb through ball from Lewis Russell and finished with aplomb.
Axminster started the second half brightly and came close to opening their account in the 47th minute with a looping left foot shot which just cleared the bar.
But the Ashes increased their lead five minutes later with full back Barker arriving on the edge of the penalty area to stroke home Maddison’s pass from the left.
Two minutes later the referee spotted a handball offence by an Axminster defender and gave a penalty which Trott dispatched to make it 6-0.
With 35 minutes left, it looked like Saltash might go on to reach double figures but substitutes Ryan Richards and Lee Phillips spurned good chances while central defender saw a header crash against a post.
O’Brien was at the centre of one of the best moves of the game in the 77th minute when he burst forward from the halfway line to play an excellent pass out to Sam Farrant on the left. Farrant managed to force a cross into the penalty area and O’Brien arrived with a header which just cleared the bar.
Elsewhere, Olly Brokenshire scored a goal in the last minute of extra time to rescue a 3-3 draw for Bodmin Town at Camelford.
The replay will be at Priory Park on Wednesday night.
