SEVEN South West Peninsula League clubs are planning a series of friendlies in April and May to give their players some competitive football with which to end the season.

West Division sides Liskeard Athletic, Saltash United, Launceston and Callington Town, and East Division clubs Millbrook, Elburton Villa and Marjon will play each other over a period of a month between the middle of April and the middle of May.

The matches will be played strictly behind closed doors, with only players and officials admitted to the ground.

Clubs will also not be advertising when the games are taking place, to deter any spectators from trying to attend.

Saltash chairman Dave Bishop told the Cornish Times: “We have a number of friendlies planned. Several clubs have got together to play each other once, and it is all behind closed doors, taking place before people are allowed to be admitted.

“We are limiting attendance to the playing squad and up to 10 committee members, and the clubhouse will not be open and we are not allowed to offer any hospitality.”

Saltash will be at home to Millbrook, Liskeard and Elburton, and away to Callington, Plymouth Marjon and Launceston.

Liskeard head coach Lee Mann said: “It is really nice that managers in the same league had the same opinion and the main focus is the welfare and fitness of their players by coming together to arrange some friendly matches through April and May behind close doors.

“For me there will be no pressure on the lads to win. It will be good just to see them running around and smiling and enjoying the freedom.”

Millbrook boss Mackenzie Brown commented: “I think all the players are looking forward to just playing a few games of football.

“When we heard that a few clubs were interested in playing friendly matches we discussed it and thought that we’d be disappointed to be waking up on a Saturday to no games, when others were. Getting everyone back together in a competitive environment can only be a good thing, with so many disruptions to normal life in the last few months.”
