Saltash moved to within three points of SWPL leaders Plymouth Argyle Reserves after a comfortable victory over Millbrook at a misty Kimberley Stadium on Wednesday night.

A dour first half was memorable only for a thunderbolt free kick from Dave Trott which broke the deadlock for the Ashes after 28 minutes.

The home side appeared to move up a couple of gears at the start of the second half and they produced the best move of the match in the 47th minute when Dave Barker and Richard Maddison combined to create a great chance in the penalty area but Sam Hughes just failed to make contact.

But the home side had to wait for only four more minutes to double their lead as a pinpoint Sam Farrant free kick from the right was powered home by central defender Callum O’Brien with a bullet header.

Saltash made it 3-0 in the 64th minute when a superb through ball from Barker set Hughes away and he held off a couple of challenges before firing a low shot past Millbrook goalkeeper Chris Wearing.

And the Ashes completed the scoring in the second minute of time added on with Danny Lewis tapping in from close range after Hughes’ initial effort on goal was blocked.
