IT has been a terrific season for St Dominick, who returned to the RRL East Cornwall League after pulling out at the end of the 2016/17 campaign after finishing third behind Torpoint Athletic and Callington Town.

They made the bold decision to re-enter the ECPL after two seasons in the Duchy League, which proved to be a wise decision.

Under manager Simon Riddle, they had a remarkable season, ending it in second place behind Mount Gould, scoring an incredible 97 goals and conceding only 19 from their 17 matches played.

They have been well led by strikers Kieran Ryall (42 goals), Kieran Prescott (24) and Ben Jeffrey (23).

St Dominick started the season with close defeats against Torpoint Athletic (3-2) and North Petherwin (2-1) before producing a remarkable run of 13 wins, one defeat and one draw from the next 15 matches.

They also reached the final of the League Cup, where they were due to play league leaders Mount Gould in the final.

Riddle said: ‘The 2019/20 season was the club’s first season back in the ECPL since withdrawing a couple of seasons ago.

‘Following the re-structure, the opportunity to go back into the league came up and, with a young side, the club felt this was a good time to take the chance.

‘We had a sticky start, with two defeats from the first two games, but then we got on a run and only lost one of our next 15 in the league, rising to second, coupled with a run to the final of the League Cup.

‘It left us with a very busy but exciting couple of months to look forward to at the end of the season.

‘Mount Gould were clearly in a very strong position to win the league, six points clear, but we, along with other sides at the top, were all looking to push them as hard as possible to the end.

‘Performance-wise, a couple of highlights were beating Foxhole 6-2 at home and getting a point at St Minver with a severely depleted squad, which was credit to the lads from the seconds who stepped in that day.

‘The trio that regularly found the net were excellent and a constant threat throughout.

‘Defenders don’t tend to get the plaudits, but the guys at the back were also really solid all season.

‘Many thanks to all the officials who work extremely hard in the background.

‘We, like everyone, are looking forward to getting out on grass again, as and when it is safe for us to do so.’

The problem is St Dominick had made known they were looking to take promotion to the St Piran League.

Unfortunately, this is all up in the air as promotion and relegation has been ruled out by the FA.
