Millbrook’s persistence paid off at The Ginsters Marsh on Tuesday evening as they recorded their seventh Carlsberg South West Peninsula League premier division win of the season.

Despite dominating long spells of an entertaining match, Millbrook seemed destined to be frustrated until man of the match Tom Payne broke the deadlock 13 minutes from time.

It took a free kick to make the breakthrough – and a fumble of Payne’s fierce low shot by Callington goalkeeper Bartosz Zarzucki, who had just made an excellent save to deny substitute Jake Foster.

But there was no denying that Mackenzie Brown’s team deserved the goal, which was followed three minutes later by a bullet header by Curtis Damerell from Sam Morcom’s excellent cross from wide on the left.

Callington, struggling near the foot of the table, deserved plenty of credit for the way they battled for every challenge and they did have chances to score themselves.

But Millbrook’s superb passing game wore them down in the second half.

There was little to choose between the sides in the opening 30 minutes and Callington came desperately close to taking a 34th minute lead when Ben Walters played the ball across the face of the Millbrook goal but Kieran Prescott just failed to get a finishing touch.

Millbrook responded with two good opportunities but Payne and then Lewis Kershaw sent left foot shots wide of the post from inside the penalty area.

Prescott had a great chance to put Callington ahead in the 54th minute but instead of hitting a first time shot he decided to take a touch, which allowed Millbrook to clear.

Then a 20-yard shot from Harry Southcott spun inches wide as the home side enjoyed their best period of pressure.

But Millbrook responded by creating more opportunities and they were able to introduce their top striker, Foster, from the bench with 20 minutes to go.

Foster almost made an immediate impact with a close range shot which Zarzucki did incredibly well to keep out with his legs, and two minutes later an inch perfect cross from the left by Payne saw Foster arriving at the far post to head against the bar.

But they had to wait only two more minutes before Payne’s goal – before the three points were sealed by Damerell.
