CALLINGTON Town manager Dave McDowell was reasonably pleased with his team’s debut season in the St Piran League, despite finishing 13th.
McDowell said: ‘Although the season came to an unfortunate end early on, it was still an enjoyable and successful term.
‘We started the season with a very young side, with little or no experience at adult level.
‘Having to start the season with so many games in August in a competitive league against some well-established teams with lots of experience came as a bit of a shock to a lot of our lads.’
One victory from their opening eight games saw the Callies off to a rocky start, but once things eventually settled down, and
despite losing heavily at St Day in the League Cup, they eventually got their season going, winning three, drawing two and losing four of the last nine games.
McDowell added: ‘It was pleasing to see how they all responded and showed some good fight and passion, as they realised what they had to do to get something from these games.
‘Hence the lack of goalscoring, with Andre Rodyukov and Corey Freeman topping the charts with just four goals each.
‘As the season progressed, we signed some more experienced players to help encourage the young lads and take some of the pressure off them.
‘They were just starting to click as a team when the season had to be stopped due to the unprecedented circumstances we all find ourselves in.
‘The experience the young lads have gained will have given them that vital understanding of what is required at adult level and will help them progress quickly as a team and individuals.
‘We are looking to further add to the squad during the summer to give us some more strength in depth. Every one of us is missing the football pitch and the team camaraderie and look forward to getting back on the field of play as and when it is right to do so.’
