Liskeard Athletic 3 Bude Town 1

Liskeard moved to within a point of SWPL division one west leaders Wadebridge, with four games in hand, after a hard-earned victory over second from bottom Bude at Lux Park on Tuesday.

Jarrad Woods set the Blues on the way to their eighth successive league win with a superb strike in the 18th minute, curling a right foot shot from 25 yards into the top corner of the net.

Three minutes later it was 2-0 when Lyle Johnson latched onto an inch perfect pass from James Lorenz and tapped the ball wide of goalkeeper Gary Dinshaw into the net.

But any thoughts of a Liskeard landslide were wiped away a minute later when Wes Pugh reduced the arrears with a brilliant left foot shot from 20 yards which gave Liskeard’s debutant goalkeeper Jamie Blatchford no chance.

Liskeard lost a little of their discipline immediately after this, with Macauley Thorp (25 minutes) and Woods (30) shown yellow cards for dissent.

But the home side settled again and could have had several more goals, with Lorenz and Jack Podmore going the closest before half-time.

And before many of the crowd were back in their places for the start of the second half, Lorenz increased their lead 20 seconds after the kick-off.

But the Blues, and Lorenz in particular, were wasteful in front of goal despite dominating the second half and left the door slightly ajar for a Bude side who looked far stronger than their record of seven successive defeats suggested.
