The goal, in the Carlsberg South West Peninsula League premier division game at Mount Wise, came from Bodmin’s kick-off.
Gilbert, manager of Bodmin, said: ‘We knew Hobbsy meant it, because he tried something similar a couple of weeks ago.
‘He hit it with such power that the goalkeeper (Adam Dower) didn’t stand a chance – it’s one of the best strikes I’ve ever seen.
‘I wondered what he was doing – I thought, he’s never going to shoot from there is he?’
Hobbs, who went on to score twice in the 6-3 win, told the Cornish Times: ‘Steve Colwell was stood beside me at the kick-off and I got him to just roll the ball to me with the top of his studs.
‘The set up has to be perfect really as I can ping a decent ball – but on this occasion I just pulled the trigger and it flew into the right hand corner of the net.
‘I asked the Newquay goalkeeper how far he was off his line and he said about three yards.
‘The ball just moved so much, he said. He is six foot four so who knows how it beat him.’
Peninsula League secretary Phil Hiscox told the Cornish Times: ‘It’s the fastest goal scored this season, and the fastest we are aware of in the premier division.’
