The Q Cornwall Leisure Veterans’ Football League is to take no action after investigating a claim that Callington Town included an ineligible player in a vital match at Grampound.
Following Callington’s 8-0 win on May 20, which subsequently meant they won the division one title on goal difference, a post on the Cornwall Football Forum appeared on May 21 from a Grampound player with the pseudonym of Woodmanaldo which indirectly made an allegation of a rule breach.
The Forum post stated: ‘Fergus Nevin was influential throughout, scoring twice and getting a few assists from his superb delivery.
‘Mistake’
‘He doesn’t appear to be on their team sheet though so they must have made a mistake when entering their team as they’ve also credited his goals to someone else.’
The Veterans’ League said in a statement: ‘The poster is correct and the player was not on the team sheet and is not currently registered with Callington Town Veterans. As a result, the league opened an investigation into the matter.
‘Having spoken to officials from both clubs, the league was in a situation where it was one club’s word against the other, with the Grampound manager stating that ‘several players recognized Nevin from other games (not Vets)’ and the Callington manager denying Nevin took part and it must have been a case of mistaken identity.
‘As there were no independent witnesses to the match, and no other physical evidence, the league has no proof of the allegation so has no alternative but to take no further action.’
