Bodmin Town Reserves have pulled out of the East Cornwall Premier League.

The decision ends a long association for the club in the league.

Bodmin had won promotion from Division One by finishing second, but with manager Shaun German and his players all going to Wadebridge Town for next season, the club informed league secretary Ken Adkins that they were withdrawing from the league.

The Bodmin team was packed with good local youngsters but continually having their games called off at Priory Park prompting a couple of players to post online a video of the pitch being dry while the club had called an ECPL match off due to the pitch being unfit.

Bodmin manager German said: ‘We called their bluff.’

Bodmin promptly kicked them off Priory Park which meant the team had to complete their home matches at Wadebridge Town.

German and Wadebridge were so impressed with each other that an agreement was made for the popular manager to move himself, his management team and his players to Wadebridge.

German had been summoned to a meeting at Bodmin in Monday but he declined, saying: ‘What was the point?’

German, who played for Bodmin’s second team for many years, revealed that he had received a ‘not very complimentary’ letter from the club.

He said his one demand when taking over the post was that he wanted the reserves not to be treated like they had under previous managers.

German brought in a number of good local youngsters and the team was well supported by the fans.

German said: ‘It is such a shame and quite frankly an embarrassing situation for the club.

‘The first team is full of players from Plymouth while we were bringing on good youngsters.’

The league have a few problems to overcome when they hold their EGM at Cornwall FA headquarters on Thursday evening.

The first will be, because of Bodmin’s withdrawal, does the league promote Division One’s third-placed Looe Town, or not relegate Liskeard Athletic, who finished second bottom in the Premier Division?
