Wadebridge Town 1 Millbrook 3
Millbrook jumped to the top of the Carlsberg South West Peninsula League division one west table on Monday night after an impressive victory over Wadebridge at Bodieve Park.
Mackenzie Brown’s side now lead by a point from Liskeard but they have two games in hand on the Blues, with their next fixture at home to Dobwalls on Wednesday.
Their success at Wadebridge was built on strength at the back and pace through midfield into attack, backed by a level of confidence which comes with an unbeaten league run which stretches back to before Christmas.
They swept into the lead after eight minutes when Jack Wood curled a superb effort from the right edge of the penalty area and doubled their lead eight minutes before the break with a Ryan Knight penalty after Jake Foster had been upended by James Baker inches inside the box.
Either side of that goal, striker Rikki Shepherd produced two stunning efforts, one which flew inches wide and the other which Wadebridge keeper Rob Rosevear managed to lift over the bar.
Man of the match Foster went close in the opening minute of the second half and 10 minutes later his mazy run along the right ended with a low shot which flew across the face of goal and just wide.
Foster was again denied in the 64th minute when his near post flick was kept out brilliantly by Rosevear as Millbrook pushed for a killer third goal.
But with the introduction of the vastly experienced Luke Hodge in the 68th minute, the home side rallied and they were desperately close to reducing the arrears in the 76th minute when Dan Jennings just failed to get a touch six yards out from a driven right wing cross.
But they did score three minutes later when a Chris Brown corner from the right was met by Tom Strike with a firm header into the net.
Millbrook goalkeeper Konstantin Andrejenko then made a crucial block in a goalmouth melee which almost brought an unlikely equaliser.
But with Wadebridge pouring forward, gaps were left at the back and Millbrook exploited them in the first minute of stoppage time as the excellent Foster provided a perfect cross from the right for Josh Toulson to head in, sparking wild celebrations from the whole Millbrook team.
Monday’s other results in the SWPL:
