ST STEPHENS Borough will be regretting that this match – the only East Cornwall League fixture to beat last weekend's 'big freeze' – went ahead.

And, were it not for a superb performance from goalkeeper Martin Dean, they could have lost by a double-digit scoreline – rather than the 5-0 it ended up.

Playing in terrible conditions, the Borough had an early escape when a Tom Rescorl penalty kick was slammed over the crossbar.

Dean was quickly in action, pulling off terrific saves, before Steve Way struck a post.

However, the Probus man was not to be denied as Way opened the scoring with a good effort.

The hosts' leaky defence then allowed central defender Mike Tindale to come up for a corner and bullet in a header unchallenged.

The Borough did have one effort which clipped the Probus crossbar, but the visitors dominated the second period, with Rescorl and Dan Vincent both hitting the woodwork, before the latter made it 3-0.

At times, the only person standing in the way of Probus adding more goals was Dean, who pulled off three superb saves before Sam Bullen added a fourth.

The away side kept up the pressure and Ben Ringrose fired another effort against the home crossbar, leaving Martin Bishop to complete the tally.
